Also I just cannot accept the legitimacy of a debate that begins by framing immigration as a problem, that says I’m fine but would treat my grandparents and father and mother-in-law as an issue to be discussed by dint of where they were born.

Immigration and racism aren’t ’cultural issues’, they’re material ones. I can’t band with others in favour of a larger, more active state despite their also being committed to a more exclusionary one. Their larger state is likely to be more repressive, exacerbate rather than tackle inequalities.
