I love blue jays, but they kind of are bastards. I feel like they’re the mafia of my backyard. They bully the other birds out of the feeder, but in exchange warn them of hawks and fight the grackles off

The multigenerational family of cardinals in our backyard has a long standing alliance with the seagulls to keep blue jays away.

Sometimes, I get aerial dogfights over my house with 3-4 birds on a side, lol. The seagulls always win.

They really do seem to establish a social order. Our cardinals are in alliance with the chickadees and mourning doves against the house sparrows. They all get bullied by the blue jays, but when the grackles come the jays join the others
