Yesterdays BBC report that schoolchildren from struggling families are pretending to eat out of empty lunchboxes to save their embarrassment at having no food is exactly why I’m joining @bigissue.bsky.social in calling for a POVERTY ZERO LAW👇

🚨Millions of people in this country are living in poverty, destitution & using food banks. It’s barely getting a mention.
I’m joining forces with @bigissue.bsky.social in calling for a POVERTY ZERO LAW - a statutory duty for every gov’t to set POVERTY REDUCTION TARGETS

There isn't a load of posters saying if you can't afford kids you shouldn't have them
In the U.S., the only kids who are faking their lunchboxes are those whose parents refuse to complete the form for the free lunch.

Granddad had a big house, he ran the No 2 carriage works (well paid etc) but even then, food was meagre.
1
Weekend treat (for me) milkman delivered a bottle of orange drink (a magic memory)
No central heating - 1 coal fire
2
Toilet (inside) had an Esso Blue heater for winter to stop freezing.
I ate lunch at school and mid morning was a small bottle of warm milk (always tasted off)
Winter meant more blankets and an eiderdown topper.
Ice on inside of bedroom windows
3
Grandad (carpenter by trade) bought BR scrap wood (as all workers could) to make most of the stuff we had (we wheelbarrowed it home on a Saturday morning)
Wooden floors painted in lino paint had large rugs in the middle
4
I remember gold seal engine replacements MONTHLY
6
Civil service exam (10th nationally) let dad go to teacher training college (years more financial misery for mom)
Food for all was the problem. Rationing wasn't long gone (as I was constantly reminded)
