We need to start judging a country's economic success not by how many billionaires it has, but by how few hungry children it has. Every child has a right to dignity, and every child deserves an equal opportunity to learn, grow and dream.

I'm old enough to remember having to have half a loaf with a bag of crisps back in the early 80s. This was my school lunch for a couple of years. Not just me, either. The local bakery made a small fortune out of kids who couldn't afford a school lunch. We used to scoop out the bread for the crisps.

I think there's something wrong with society when they feel embarrassed about having no food. No child, or adult, should be embarrassed about the inability of the state to ensure they are able to eat.

Free school meals for all. No means testing. It is in everyone’s interest that all children get at least one good, nourishing meal per day. Also a great social activity to eat together: builds the team.

The previous government normalised this. People are no longer shocked when things like this happen. It needs something different to happen or different wording. We can't really pin it on the current government unless they continue to ignore the problem.

Completely agree, no child should go hungry yet it was up to sports personalities to raise the cry on this while the Tory govt sat on its hands. Plus at a time when Charles opens 2 new food banks just after receiving a £45m pay rise. Obscene.

I am seeing the numbers using our local foodbank going up again as we approach the colder months and the number of children being claimed for has increased quite considerably. It's great that children in reception through to year 2 can get free school meals but maybe we need to go further.
