The Tories were hell bent on keeping the many from higher education who would questioning their authority by culling advantage from pre schoolers. They did it in the 60’s educating to factory level only!

Sure Start was pivotal to the (horribly named) Troubled Families Programme. That programme’s pilots in 2011/12 proved the concepts of early and hands on interventions worked EXTREMELY WELL. Often the need for support was first identified at Sure Start and Sure Start was also part of the solution.

We shouldn't be cutting services. We should be investing to create hope, resilience, aspirations. We should be empowering curiosity and bring joy into learning. This would require a complete rethink of our education system. It is possible !

I read research around the US equivalent decades ago. The personal and societal impacts were huge. Better quality of life, through better job opportunities. Reduced crime, healthcare and welfare costs.

The money saved by society far outweighed the cost of the programme over the long term.

Sure start was a major success for the New Labour government, the piecemeal dismantling of the system was unforgiveable and the consequences continue to be felt.

Absolutely. I was involved in delivering a small part of the initial sure start programme, and even in its infancy you could see the benefits appearing…so why cut.
