Most unions are also able to offer free perks like free legal advice, reduced cost for Will writing and probate services, cheaper insurance, etc. As a member of a union there is also collective solidarity in range of issues like climate change, corporate abuse, and policy making. Money well spent!

I remember the bad old days of unionism, British Leyland production crippled, the winter of discontent with huge piles of rat filled rubbish uncollected. Today I too would recommend joining a union, guys like Mick Lynch are professional and responsible, simply promoting members rights not agitating.

there is a bank holiday this week that didnt exist when i started work, i think it was the blair government that set a minimum of 5.6 weeks holiday, in effect 4 wks plus bank holiday.
I was a member of the engineering union, i think they were one of the first to get a 39 hr week.

This is so true. I'm currently caring for my poorly 91 year old father.. among his proudest memories, as he's reminding me, are being union rep & fighting people's cases to protect their rights in the 80's & 90's - particularly female staff who were being denied rights even after they'd become law.
