First off, yeah. That’s rough. Literal rage against the machine.

But second, why not give a concrete example and have all the kids “search” things that they already know to be true? Somebody is bound to get an objectively wrong answer, and that illustrates the point.

This just demonstrates that we need tech literacy courses as part of basic education. They need to learn that they need to verify information and sources, and that AI is still in the toddler phase and is prone to giving incorrect answers without knowing

This is amplified by the discovery Ed movement, kids can “discover” facts on their own, they don’t need a curriculum expert to teach them when all the “facts” can be found online.

Yep and discoveryed also had instructional strategies and listened to teachers. It was an elite edtech tool.

Students were bad as searching/ synthesizing information before AI... Really feel like we need to (re) introduce a "library"/ tech literacy class for the modern age.

I feel like part of that conversation obviously involves CS but IMO it really it comes back to "how to do research?" Which, back in the day, we learned from the librarian...

Agreed but there are schools that don't have libraries or librarians. I would be great for it to be a specials/required elective class K-8, research and the library.

I had a "My [TI-8x] calculator lies" lesson... Which was a great eye-opener for students.
Definitely feels like there needs to be a larger scale, intentional, training on how to internet.

S are great at consuming media, not so great at processing/synthesizing.

I feel like calculators are becoming out dated... but about half way through the derivatives unit in AB I would show my Ss how the TI could take a derivative... and then promptly asked them find the derivative of abs(x) at x=0.

I'm currently in a grad school - even there, LLM analysis is pervasive, to the point where professors make lesson plans on the the best way to use AI for improved research "productivity". Learning seems to be a hinderance now to (subpar) output, which is terrifying and somehow unsurprising.

One of my biggest worries now is the Dunning-Kruger effect - if prima facie correct but actually wrong info is being propagated to kids and adults from a LLM search, how many people are going to claim knowledge on a subject that they know next-to-nothing about, like tech bros "fixing" K12 ed?
