Difference between now and the Bush years (and Trump and Bush as people, tbh) is Trump is hermetically sealed in a world where he thinks the vast majority love what Elon and him are doing, and is systematically being kept from negative feedback. He'll keep on the gas.

This is the natural end state of American conservatism. They’ve never cared about the will of the public since possibly the 1980s otherwise we wouldn’t have mass slaughter of kids in our schools
