Idk. I think it's notable how little we've heard on the numbers and how little pressure is being applied that the Leafs "need" to sign Marner from insiders (Kypreos included). My pet theory is Marner didn't like the way it made him look and isn't green lighting Ferris to take that tact.
I’ve had the same thoughts about the muzzle, and I do appreciate the lack of chaos this time. Maybe it's just PTSD from last time, but Kypreos’ consistently outrageous valuations of Marner make me feel like there’s some light quid pro quo happening here.
I think he's absolutely getting info but he's not doing the same kinds of things that Dreger and others did last time that painted a story the Leafs had to keep him. Way less overt pressure on the Leafs org.
Yeah, when asked yesterday Kypreos said he had no clue if they were negotiating, and everyone agreed he wants to stay, but the Leafs decision hinges on what *they* want to do.
Yup. That was not the insider line last time around. And Marner has actual power this time. I think Marner wants to stay and doesn't feel like torching his rep again.
Which is weird, because you would think the "they have to keep him" storyline would be more played-up for a pending UFA than someone coming out of their ELC.
Feels like everyone just assumes this is going to get done. Just a matter of how much it hurts the Leafs' cap.
That was the best, when Bourne basically accused him of laundering Ferris’ terms and Kyp was PISSED.
Don’t like being called a shill? Don’t act like one.
He did but I'm fairness, they really pulled that out of Kypreos. He didn't want to give it a number at all. He thinks Marner is the Leafs MVP and has made no secret of his feelings. But he hasn't really pushed that the Leafs *have* to pay him Matthews money. He just thinks he's worth it.
We disagreed about this at the time and I still don't agree. To me it seemed like Kyper clearly had something to say, and Sam and Bourne, recongnizing that, just humored him. Kyper was dying to put that number out there.
We'll never know but I will say if the Marner camp really wanted to get numbers into the wild, they could have before that and since. They've done that before to great affect. Would make sense to repeat that if they really are intending to auction Marner's services to the highest bidder.
If Marner hits to open market, someone is paying him (or at least offering him) that much.
I’m not saying he’s worth it, but as he’s an unrestricted free agent, some team is going to take a chance at a player who could be a top-ever franchise player for them.
I think someone would offer him Matthews money but not a good team. People often use the Panarin comparable because he hit the open market, similar player in term of value and got top dollar. But those people usually fail to mention NYR were a rebuilding team when he signed, not a contender.
They've always had a bit of a back and forth. Makes the show interesting. I don't really dislike Kypreos to the degree many do. He's entertaining. He's very often wrong but he is elevated when paired with smart people who challenge him.
Yes. I love the show. I think they have a great dynamic.
There was a degree of deferral from Bourne to Kyper, when they started, that has disappeared this season.

They will have the cap space and are a similarly large original six hockey market.
