It's not protectionism. This is about shifting the tax burden. He's said time and time again that he can replace income tax with tariffs. He's talked about how he will "get rid" of income tax but never about how we build factories. He only has a plan for one of those things.

Shifting the tax burden by making almost everything we buy more expensive. Please explain that one because consumers are the ultimate victims. Tariffs are paid by importing companies not exporting countries.

It's not an accident. It's always the way he does these awful things. He says he's doing one thing, in this case, bringing jobs back, so we call him stupid because it won't. What he's doing is evil. He's using tariffs in place of income tax. The people who spend more of their income are taxed more.

He absolutely doesn't understand how tariffs work. We would all like no income tax but paying more for everything is not a good trade off. Especially since it will impact the lower and middle class more and leave the wealthy even wealthier. And yet the ones most impacted are clueless.

Economists were sounding the alarms about the Trump tariff "plans" but the GOP still applauded his "brilliance." The people who did not vote for Trump understood the lunacy of his tariffs.

Understanding tariffs is step 1. Not meant to be a battering ram for any country. No country is "taking advantage" of us.
Trade is an exchange of goods. Some countries have what we need but they don't need what we have. It's not a plot, it's trade.
Congress does tariffs, not the president.

Actually plenty of countries are taking advantage of the United States. Almost every country in the world protects their internally manufacturing by taxes and tariffs while flooding or markets with cheap goods manufactured by underpaid people

The US cannot/does not manufacture all of the goods we need. We cannot isolate ourselves from the global economy. That is what Trump is doing without a sustainable plan or incentives for building infrastructure for manufacturing. We need other countries.

I just went and stocked up on general items that come from China. Guess what? EVERYTHING COMES FROM CHINA!!!!! Right now you need 3-6 months of items if you want to ensure you don’t run out. The ports are already closed so when warehouses and stores empty, nothing more to buy.
