“The administration seems to basically be saying they have the right to essentially declare people equivalent to dead who have not died. That’s a hard concept to believe, but it brings enormous risks and consequences.”

"Entry into the Death Master File has potentially severe consequences, effectively erasing a person’s ability to live and draw wages in the U.S., according to Jim Francis, a consumer law attorney. ... “Overnight you literally become financially paralyzed.”"
Why? Because SS provides information to people like credit agencies, insurance companies, etc. So if they say you are dead, you can lose your insurance, your access to credit, your financial everything.
DOGE is doing this to (people it thinks are) immigrants, who are very much alive.
Also — and I’ve seen no mention of this — it deprives the social security system of $25-30 BILLION a year in revenues, about 2.5% of the total. Enough to substantially hasten the day when SS can’t pay full benefits.
If this stands, does it *necessarily* follow that the administration will be free to order the execution of these already dead people without process or evidence?
Or is there space for a middle ground? (And why do I imagine I sound like a character in ‘Conspiracy’ arguing with Branagh?)
