it was a chat bubble with a right arrow on it (meant to be a "jump to message" icon but not used for that yet)
turns out changing the forwarding icon to the reversed reply icon increased forwarding use a lot, presumably because this is the icon that every other platform uses for forwarding
im sorry but for anyone like the current icons lol? or was the ”people like them” metric more people clicking on it. cause i certainly click the current one a lot accidentally 🥲
square with right arrow seems like the most intuitive one to me because it's similar to the square with up arrow, which is the iOS share icon and is understood by a lot of people
forwarding a message is a form of sharing it so having an icon that resembles share makes sense
