Federalism is an obstacle to advancing authoritarianism, but nothing is foolproof. A few state governments in the wrong hands could effectively cancel out free and fair elections in the rest of the country for determining control of Congress or tipping the Electoral College.

things are very bad right now, but the US also has advantages that other backsliding democracies haven't. the best example of this imo is our bafflingly decentralized elections system: there is literally no way for the federal govt to "cancel" a midterm election, bc the feds don't run elections
