Seeing that parts of Illinois want to join Indiana (& Oregon-> Idaho), I don’t think these states align in any way other than geographically. There’s a bigger clash of rural vs. urban areas in these states, meaning they can’t be viewed as all being politically aligned the same way across the state in order to make solid bonds with all their neighboring states. A map showing separate but aligned city islands in those states is more likely.

I feel there may be some exchanges of territory afterwards, but I do think the original break will be at border level because it is going to happen at the state legislature.

Unfortunately Indiana wouldn't join the Great Lakes Confederation, more right-wing and actual Confederate except for Indy, Bloomington, West Lafayette and the Region (Chicagoland)

The Great Lakes Confederation is the one in the least sure about.
It might just end up being part of the union, with parts joining Canada.
