I was enlisted in the US Army. I wasn't a good soldier, but I served. When I see the Veteran's of Foreign Wars monument at the local cemetery, that quote comes to my mind along with white hot anger over the disgrace of General Bonespurs.

I appreciate that, but it feels awkward and misplaced. I do feel a bond, a sense of kinship with other, more worthy members of the Armed Forces. Let the focus be on those who gave all, and their sacrifice being desecrated by that one who refused.
