Also if you think creatives need to suffer to make good art, do the creatives in your life know you hate them?

I do agree, but also it’s because of cancer that I have a book contract now. So my suffering very directly led to some good art. (It’s more complicated than that, obviously, but this experience has provoked some deep thought on creativity)

This. I get that suffering can inform art, but humans are also capable of empathy and imagination, so I don't have to suffer to tell good stories. Suffering for the sake of art is not a virtue.

A great tonic for this thinking for me was reading On Writing by King were he openly addresses the belief (that even he held) that being an alcoholic wreck somehow makes writers better. It’s romantic but not true. They’re workers. They use tools and get to work. Grumpiness is optional.
