Beyond this specific use, doing lineart in a monochrome layer has a few bonuses. It has better performance (each pixel is literally 1 bit, on or off), and fill bucket becomes less fickle because it makes boundaries super clear! You can always get your aliasing back later with a glow effect/blur.

For lineart specifically (monochrome stuff), if your layer is in "color" mode, liquify tool will most likely blur it during transformation...
