Things they were right about:
1. The govt *can* just turn on you
2. You can't (won't?) burn it down before they move in
3. They'll try to do evil shit anyway, but the data does make *materially* faster and easier, and faster/easier could be the difference.

But also, it's helpful to have an Evil Govt model to think through. It's not a boot on the human face *forever*, which is an inherently impossible threat to defend against; it's a scramble for power built on momentum and intimidation, and every speed bump counts.
