Before you start writing: What's your goal? A 1-2 page article gives you space to argue one point well

(The word limit isn't a challenge to cram in information as densely as possible)

If you're busy, so are your readers. So by the end of the first paragraph, they should know why they want to keep reading - what's the rest of the article going to tell them that's new? Why do they need to know about it now?

In an opinion piece, you have to actually tell people what your opinion is (backed up with evidence)

If you express it so blandly or abstractly that no-one can disagree with you, readers won't engage
