The bald eagles at my nearby park had to rebuild their nest this year due to the previous one falling over the summer. We can only see with binoculars, but we keep joking that it is like watching a couple go through a home renovation considering how much the female yells at the male eagle.
For 6 years Iβve watched this cammed nest located on Catalina Island off the coast of California. Female is named Thunder and is about 15 years old. The male is named Aketcha and is 5 years old. They have produced 3 eaglets every year for 4 years. The nest itself has been in use for over 100 years.
The Channel Islands lost their entire eagle population due to a toxic spill in 1980βs. The company responsible agreed to fund Institute for Wildlife Studies to restore eagles to the islands. And they did!
It's pure joy to watch an eagle pair build their nest. It's pure magic that, despite all the "differences of opinion" about what stick goes where, a large, sturdy nest forms. The largest bald eagle nest on record was in St. Petersburg, FL: 10 feet in diameter, 20 feet tall, and ~4,500 lbs (>2 tons).
I told you we should have gone to IKEA but oh no you insisted on DIY - idiot. Delores was right. The kids wonβt have a clue butβ¦ love ya (my idiot).
