Namibia's democratization follows a similar trend as its former colonizing country, South Africa: an "umbrella" liberation party that has ruled uncontested since decolonization.
Namibia has had a stable, partly ethnically based party system. Unlike South Africa, the president is directly elected by a plurality electoral system, and the national assembly is elected by PR party list with multi-constituencies.
During the democratic consolidation of Namibia, SWAPO, as a party with originally strong ethno-political ties (mostly in the north, where more than half of the population is located), has successfully articulated and aggregated the societal interests and demands of the majority of the voters.
