Sometimes I get extremely frustrated by people claiming ADHD Hyperfocus is a 'superpower'.
Being locked into reading for like 20hrs straight without sleeping or eating because my brain glitches out and isn't responding to reason is NOT a superpower I assure you. π

IT WASN'T EVEN VERY GOOD!
People don't seem to understand that 95% of the time the ADHD chooses what we hyperfixate on, not us lol.
I probably did it before that already, but when I was around 8, I took a book from my stepmother in the evening, and read the whole thing through the night. I ended up going to bed at 7 am or something.
What did I read? 13 Reasons Why. LMAO
I wish they'd come up with a less misleading name for it because the 'deficit' part has people thinking we can't focus when really it's DISORDERED attention, meaning uncontrolled attention not just lack of it.
Executive Function Disorder maybe?
I decided to 'read a bit' around 11pm last night and my brain finally allowed me to stop about 7pm tonight.
I think my brain decided it very much isn't ready to get back to work and staged a protest. I live alone so there wasn't any interruption to my Hyperfocus. π
Youβre probably really good with reading comprehension, whereas I have to learn through visual aides and dialogue.
Hyperfocus is individual intense sessions of focus on a single activity without being able to stop. You may have a Hyperfocus session on a Hyperfixation, but it can also be on something you don't enjoy.
Like someone else hijacks your brain for a day and abandons you to the physical and mental consequences!?
It's not exploitable if I don't get to choose what I Hyperfocus on and it makes me ill!
Even if I do manage to Hyperfocus on my illustration work, excessive drawing time causes physical injury. Not exactly desirable.
It's just pretty difficult to anticipate when it'll happen and put safeguards in place to stop you at a reasonable time. π
Now I have Chronic pain and I'm over 30 my body is a lot less forgiving of this behaviour than it used to be lol!
I've had shorter Hyperfocus sessions of working/creating/reading that were fun or helpful yes, but doing 1 activity for 20hrs straight is never going to be healthy.
