In Japan, the Saturn was trying NOT to look like the Mega Drive, which was a failure over there. (Even though JP Mega Drive is objectively the sexiest console ever but that's beside the point.)

In Japan, the Dreamcast looked very much like a successor to the successFUL Saturn.
Everywhere else, that same look made it feel like a fresh start after the Saturn bombed.
I also didn’t know Mega Drive wasn’t a big success in Japan. But, I think the Genesis was sexier in name and look.
Yoh, who much prefers the design of the Sat 1 with its shiny plate and oval buttons.
