FF games are obviously popular on here! admittedly I've never played any (except for Secret of Mana if that counts) ... I always felt intimidated by the fact that there are so many of them and the sheer amount of lore. any recommendations for a complete beginner?

Secret of Mana is an entirely different series. All Final Fantasy games are standalone, 4-9 all play very similarly and you can probably start with any of those or X, when people talk about the golden era of Final Fantasy, they usually mean 4-10. All of them are really good games if you like JRPGS

Secret of Mana actually had nothnig to do with Final Fantasy though the first game was localized as "Final Fantasy Adventure" for marketing reasons but it's a completely different series.

To be entirely fair, the first game is a Final Fantasy spin-off of sorts. Its Japanese title is Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden, although I'm pretty sure re-releases have dropped the subtitle. I'm playing it right now, an' I love my Chocobo friend 🥰

I pre-ordered those games, I remember it being announced that game would be music focused and that Noriko Mitose, of Chrono Cross fame, would be one of the singers which sold me on it initially. I eventually imported all of the Hmynos concert CDs from Japan as well.

Ar Tonelico II is honestly one of the best RPGs of the PS2 era, it's an absolute classic. If possible, I recommend playing it with the fan re-translation patch which cleans up the localization a bit and fixes some of the bugs.

I have the first 5 games. I think 3 is the second worst in the series after the original. 5 is easily the best and 2 is my second favorite after that. Like the first game, 3 is very unbalanced, also bad memories from poor translation that gives wrong directions for getting through the desert.

I mostly only play JRPGs. Final Fantasy is easily one of my all time favorite game series though last few installments have been pretty disappointing, and based on what I've heard about XVI, that trend continues, apparently it's not even an RPG :(

I first played the first one sold in the States when I was in college. I am a dedicated XIV player (20+ alts!, I have a problem...). I've played some of the intervening titles, like VII, VIII, and XIII. I have to say, from my partner's XVI streams, it's getting a bad rap.

Final Fantasy is also one of my favorite series. My mom bought me FF1 back when it came out because I told her I liked the cover.

I decided to play/finish as many Final Fantasy games until 16 comes out on PC (sometime after December?). I'm working on 8 right now.

Ironically my mom rented me Final Fantasy III (VI) for the SNES when I was like 9 years old, I don't she knew what kind of game it was, she probably saw the cute mole bat on the box and thought it would be a good game for kids. I ended up really loving it and loving the series ever since.

My grandmother bought me FF6 when she came up to visit me. I was 14. I told her how much I loved FF4 [ obviously FF2 on SNES just as FF6 was FF3 ].

She and my mom bought FF4 when it came out on SNES. I named Mog after my grandma.

I first played II (IV) when I was college. One of the guys in my fraternity had it for SNES, and it really sucked me in. I've played the series ever since. I think that the direction the series has taken is to appeal to consumer $, since that matters more than appealing to a niche.

FF7R is still an RPG which is not what's being said about 16. One review say that Street Fighter 6 World Tour mode has more more RPG elements than Final Fantasy XVI does, which is a pretty damning statement. I play RPGs because I like RPG mechanics. I'm not a fan of DMC or God of War.

My partner has been streaming it on her Twitch, and while yes, it's a bit more like GoW or the AC series with "here's a quest, do this to continue the story" than a pure RPG, the story and the gameplay are huge improvement over XIII or XV.

There's a streamer close to our age that's playing FF16. I've been watching him go through it. It's not totally an RPG but it's got compelling storylines and ARPG type fighting like FF7R. So.. I think I'll like it when I get my hands on it.

I'm not really into character action games. Devil May Cry and God of War never appealed. I couldn't even get into the 3D Zelda games outside of Windwaker, and the only Tales game I actually liked was Symphonia, I have Xillia, Abyss and Vesperia, don't really like them either.

13 was okay but I never revisited it. I liked the characters in 13, the story was a bit uneven but not bad. I mostly just hated how restricted the game felt. I have nothing against linear gameplay, linear is fine, it's just 13 felt it wanted to be more a TV series than a game.
