The country will be 250 years old next year and at no point in its history has it upheld "all men are created equal" as anything more than something to say when criticizing other countries' "lack of freedom." Laws have NEVER been applied equally to everyone in this country.

So when you see inequality and say "this isn't us!" Who tf is it? If a man beat his girlfriend starting from the beginning of the relationship but every time he did you'd say "that's not who he is! he's better than that!" You'd be the exact same type of abuse apologist as "this isnt us!" Folks.

That's how you sound to marginalized people. The descendants of Indian boarding schools, enslaved people, lynched people, internment camp survivors, Tuskegee experiment survivors, mass incarceration survivors...you're telling them what happened to them was a fluke and they should be forgiving.

And before you deflect and say "well if you hate it so much..." STFU. It's a country. I don't love it or hate it. I exist in it by the arbitrariness of birth, just like you. The problem isn't that i hate the US. It's that YOU don't hate oppression. You hate looking bad on the global stage, maybe.

You hate overt bigotry. But if you ACTUALLY hated the horrible things this country has done to marginalized peoples you would have been standing with them in unity BEFORE what happened to us began happening to you. Be honest with YOU, and maybe there's a way forward. But until then 🖕🏾
