actually, why not get *two* sets? I do audio mixing, and I've found that having multiple points of reference is never a bad idea - DT 770s to test on a more V-shaped curve (what most headphones target) with Sennheiser HD 600s to test on a more balanced frequency curve (professional gear)?
those two sets costs about $450-$500 US total iirc, the rest of that $300 could go towards a pretty good hi-res desktop DAC you could plug into whenever you want to swap gear
I've been living with my same set of desktop speakers and USB headset long enough to not have a clue what a DAC is, whereabout should I be looking for that?
I've found beyerdynamic DT are a bit heavy in the low mids, and personally I can't wear them as long without getting a headache.

yeah, I mostly use them to check mixes and don't spend super long w them unless I'm tracking.. I should probably adjust them more, but the sennheisser 6xx are so comfy I forget I'm wearing them
