I may be becoming less cynical/more forgiving with age but in the past there were at least real and true champions of Wales in the PLP. Paul Flynn, Ron Davies, Elystan Morgan, Rhodri Morgan, Jim Griffiths, Cledwyn Hughes, etc to balance out the Westminster-first contingent.

I’m perhaps less cynical and do believe that the leadership in Welsh Labour (for what it’s worth) would genuinely like to have the power to do stuff in Wales.

The gulf between the UK and Welsh parliamentary groups on all things Wales though is *enormous* and I don’t see that changing any time soon.

I'm afraid the clear red water is long gone, the current iteration of the Welsh government is head office's creature, most of the decent ones are leaving & the closed lists will ensure that head office tightens it's grip, I think they will come to regret having won this battle, just look at Scotland

Certainly it sounds like UK Lab is steering the ship with regards list candidates. It does risk the party losing votes to Plaid/Greens/Libs on the one flank and taking a beating from Reform on the other.

I left the UK 33 years ago & found out what it is like to live in a functioning democracy, this experience has turned me in to a supporter of Welsh national liberation, the UK is terminally dysfunctional, I doubt it could be fixed even if the political class HAD the will, which they really don't...

FWIW I do think the UK (or some form of British union) could survive and thrive in the future but only with significant metamorphosis.

The current framework does feel that it’s on a terminal trajectory.

UK Lab has always been centralist, much like the Tories, this is why the UK is one of the World's most centralised States, Wales has been shafted by both sides for generations, there will be no reform because English nats & English Labour don't want it, we are ripped off at every conceivable level.

The prospects aren’t good for Wales or Scotland, fully agree. Not sure I do on the idea of ‘English nats’ though. They proponents of a *very* Anglocentric form of Britishness that sees everything through the prism of the UK state as a whole. The last thing they do is think about ‘England’.

It's because England have a bad case of "saint envy". They just can't deal with the fact Saint David was actually from Wales, while Saint George never set foot in England.
