I think he only really stood out because every other protagonist from that era was a buzz cut white guy called Mason who's personality was "frowning".
a few years back I watched a presentation by one of the devs of a Forza Horizon game, who was really proud of how they had *simulated dew on leaves*
and like buddy you made a *racing game*, nobody is going to get out of their car to look at the leaves!!!
It's a bit of a copout answer, but a lot of what Nintendo puts out.
They *get* it.
For example, Breath of the Wild still looks far more impressive to me than the majority of mainstream open world games.
On a technical level, it's pretty basic. On an artistic level? Unmatched.
