Once the Internet became integrated into day-to-day life --rather than being this relatively niche thing-- it was over.

The iPhone was the beginning of the end (he says as he types this on his phone in the kitchen).

I do think that having the Internet on you at all times --on always on devices-- is such a double-edged sword, and the past few years show we are just not able for that.

Having the Internet relegated to a room or place gave it that much needed element of separation from day-to-day life.

Back in 95/96 I worked on a magazine called The Web. Basically a lifestyle mag for the early internet. We'd highlight cool sites across multiple categories and run features on big questions like "Will we ever be able to buy things online?" and "Imagine downloading a whole song!" God, I miss it.
