#OnThisDay in 1653, the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam became a city when it received municipal rights. The English took it over in 1664 and renamed it New York after the Duke of York (later King James II). Russell Shorto’s book ‘The Island at the Center of the World’ details its history. #OTD 🗃️
