3 isn't actually that bad it's just kind of dull — definitely a rough draft for 5. I think what happened to 2 is that Seanbaby or scott sharkey said "2 is the game where you have to attack yourself to level up" and instead of playing the game to check that people just repeated it.
It seems clearer now to say that JRPGs were kind of a conservative genre for a while but when you see how badly people reacted everytime Kawazu tried something new it shows how it's sorta always been the case.
