I think you're jumping to conclusions -- I haven't seen any reporting on what kind of plane crashed or the purpose of the flight. Only "small plane" and "two passengers."

General aviation doesn't have all that great a safety record, more on less on par with motorcycle riding.

In general aviation there are huge variances in training, equipment, & maintenance. Pilot judgement & lack of recent experience (especially with emergencies) are major contributing factors.

Do you have a source? It's what I was taught in flight school & it's consistent with the NTSB data (if you look at accidents over a common # of hours of operation). In any case, general aviation (Part 91) is nowhere near as safe as airlines (Part 121).
