The Ferry was named for the original owner, whose last name was "White." Yes, non white people could cross it and did. It was fairly unique and kind of charming even though at one point the actual boat was named "Jubal Early."

I went over that ferry about 15 years ago. It was awesome and gave an opportunity to cross the Potomac between VA and MD without going all the way up to US 15 or down to I-495. Open it back up now!
