1. Check in with folks who you mentor about how they are doing… not just how things are going with their projects. Share resources or contacts that can provide additional support.
2. Be proactive about assessing issues they may arise that directly impact mentees, and inform them of updates (funding freezes, grant restrictions, program changes, etc.)
3. Be real. I’m not asking you to freak out publicly, but it’s helpful to know that mentors are taking the things going on in the environment seriously. It’s okay to share.
4. Pledge your support of your beliefs and follow with actions. I don’t intend to undo the culture or inclusion we have put at the forefront of our lab. Our values are still the same.
5. Provide assurance: if you have the details of your funding portfolio, share these. For example, how long can the lab go on with its current grant portfolio? What are the scientific priorities? What grants are forthcoming?
6. Provide a safe space for folks outside of your lab to talk. Not everyone has a mentor who is available, sympathetic, or understanding. I’m here if you want to talk, my DMs are open.
