Another thing I love that arakawa never felt the need to explain: mustang's background. You get just enough to know he's got one, but this ain't about him

friend of mine used FMA as an example of good characterization a few months back, explaining that you could pluck any of these characters out of the story and make an entire story about them (the whole idea that they are the main character of their own story separately) FMA is so good for that.
i have some thoughts on her later work wrt that (i would not say she applied this philosophy equally, silver spoon for example is not that.) but FMA is absolutely good for that!
i know this is a side effect of jpn>eng translation from nongendered 'hai' to 'yessir' etc, but I love how the briggs guys call gen armstrong 'sir'. it's a good choice the translators made
there was a tumblr post I read like a decade ago that said "FMA is a Western world/story told through an Eastern lens; ATLA is an Eastern world/story told through a Western lens" and I've thought about that every damn day since
Sorry, Im not american nor knowledgeable abt military stuff in general 😅 also watched the show in Italian I believe (and no I do not remember how they address her unfortunately). My question was mostly bc she is the highest ranked woman we meet i think
