That said... I spend about NZ$400 per year on clothing on average, and if you consider that the average t-shirt at the warehouse is a mindboggling $6, then that works out to 67 warehouse t-shirts per year

That’s an interesting estimation, but it already has serious issues. First the $1,866 figure is per household, not individual. So it would be closer to 38 items.

Second, it includes items such as shoes, jewelry, and accessories, which I feel like would drive up the average cost of an item.

Sure! This has the most easily accessible data we publish. A frequent question is price per item, or even just quantity of items for each expenditure, but unfortunately it isn’t something the survey captures well.
