But you have to carry on with your life somehow. Our Mo had been luckier than most but I know this dreadful invasion has affected him badly, he’s seen things nobody should have to.

Yes, you do. You learn to live with it. I grew up with my parents' narratives of WW2 occupation by the Japanese & the destruction of Manila by the Americans. They both experienced in front of them the deaths of friends and family blown to bits by US bombardment. It left scars that never healed.

In fact, the 80th anniversary of the deaths of my Dad's brother and Mom's father is coming up - 13th February.

Yes they must remain with you all your life yet so many of that generation and the WWI generation never spoke of their experiences. What soldiers in WWI went through I can’t begin to imagine. How stupid is our species. And we never learn.
