sol yurick, most famous for writing the original novel of "the warriors", wrote his first book about a guy whose son is refused admittance to a hospital and dies, and then goes on a rampage murdering everyone involved in the process.

I discovered yesterday, incidentally, that Lin Manuel-Miranda has done a whole Warriors concept album. I approve of this because the film was always a theatre kid production one step short of being a musical - the last gasp of gangs-as-theatre before the public mood turned inextricably.
that's a stark contrast with the book which is a work of grim 60s social realism based on Yurick's experiences as a social worker, the boys are between 14-17 and already damned to short, brutal lives of cruelty and the "warriors" element is heavily ironic.
you know how they pick up the girl from the other gang and she becomes an honorary warrior and there's a cute half-romance between her and one of them?
I might have been too old to be impressed when I finally got around to watching it. I was familiar with it through samples only (Can U Dig It?). When I saw the film, a lot of the other gangs felt less threatening and more Kids from Fame.
Nice shout out for Sol. Lived in my neighborhood in Brooklyn. Parents had me read his books when I was a kid. Which, honestly, was not a great idea. Really excellent author and mensch.
