stephen king went from being *extremely* broke to a nice deal for the Carrie hardback to an *incredible* deal for the Carrie paperback, and he's generally very good about writing about poverty still
I've been going through The Shining (The original book) and it's interesting how much of Jack Torrance's motivation to not leave the Overlook is motivated by genuine fear that if he misses this one opportunity, he and his family will be destitute.
