First-time orchid owners notoriously overwater. It turns out that for the most popular orchids, three ice cubes a week is about the right amount of water. So that was a way to make it seem less intimidating. Was also suggested years ago for hanging baskets where it's easy to spill water.
Hmmm overwatering is more about frequency than amount of water though so interesting theory. I’ve never had orchids though. I don’t think I would ever consider that method for any of my houseplants based on that theory.
The suggestion is three ice cubes, one day a week, so they cover both amount and frequency. We're not going to water our houseplants with ice cubes either.
