It took more effort to get sound effects working than expected. I was hoping to just use WAV files but they sounded awful. I had to find a program that could create VGM files instead. Sound effects cut off the music when played but that's just the Game Boy. Even retail games had that issue.

.wav files are a fun addition! but even with the right tweaking, they really only sound good on original hardware. that whining buzz is awful everywhere else! 😵‍💫

Everything I tried just sounded like static. The actual .WAV file would be something that sounded similar to the sound when you interact with an actor in this clip, but when heard in game it was just static. The VGM files work much better for me.

I'm glad you have a solution! I pretty much only use .wav files for any external recorded audio I want in a game (like a dog bark or a VCR tape ejecting). I haven't gone full Perfect Dark GBC with it yet and done fully-voiced cutscenes~

actually, I followed this video! I've tweaked the ratios a tiny bit over time, but this is still the basics that I've used, if you're interested. like I said, though, unless it plays from an actual Game Boy or Super GB, .wav sounds are cursed with an annoying whine/buzz. 😵‍💫

Very true! I remember being taken to buy my first ever Game Boy in 1995. I still have some of my various childhood Game Boy stuff. My Advance SP is still one of my main handheld consoles to this day - works great!
