Unforgiven is a brilliant movie for many reasons but it’s his portrayal of a fascistic sheriff that stays with me. Brave & well-meaning but also sadistic & power mad. He had turned down playing Lecter in Silence of the Lambs because of the violence but felt this critiqued it.
