Not that unpopular nerds and dumb jocks don't exist, and admittedly I'm from small town USA, but a lot of people are from small towns; I doubt my experience is that abnormal.

I can think of a lot of things I hated about hs but being shunned for being one of the 'smart' kids wasn't one of them

if anything, you were MORE likely to be one of the more well-known, 'popular' kids if you were on the advanced track, in multiple clubs, social activities, etc.

Rammerjammeryellowhammer is a millennial who somehow completely missed how most American millennials were pushed by their parents to be all-around overachievers. And I don't think we can chalk that up to him being a first-gen American with a different childhood experience

He's just unobservant as shit and also playing dumb to how the US uses structural racism to block certain groups from even being able to pursue 'normalcy,' let alone 'excellence.' Also conveniently ignores that many rural schools don't even have AP or STEM courses so it's not a known path for many

I didn't even like Family Matters (don't attack me #blacksky!) but just the fact that there was a popular show where a BLACK kid was the socially clueless geek was actually progressive and very well might have been the first time many black kids thought 'wow, that's an option for me?'

but yeah anyway you CAN be both highly intelligent and a socially functional human being (for that matter, you can be socially awkward and still have lots of friends) and it's a bit of a bummer that the discourse for the most part doesn't recognize or acknowledge this
