As long as the program has basically 0 specific external hardware, doesn’t need any control over audio devices and isn’t mission critical, then it’s fine. Any sort of program that actually does anything just doesn’t work.

I think it's a cocktail of sunk cost fallacy (I've certainly been there myself a few times) and religious fervor. Some people reeeaaally want to trot out the "you can run your windows programs on linux!" talking point whenever they can, but I think that's ultimately damaging for linux adoption.

I had to take a bit to think about my response & reread your reply. This is a difficult topic that is mostly a technological landmine no matter what one says. My initial comment was towards my own tendency to fall under that sunk cost fallacy. Tech is cool, time is valuable, Linux is equally 1/🧵

great but also flawed like all human tech. One thing I love is anything related to software reverse engineering, binary analysis & even development, those all are where I most comfort on Linux. Windows is my main right now out of what it does best: it works most of the time without my 2/🧵

intervention all that much for the majority of the tasks I do right now. If I had the budget & time, I'd return to OSX in a heartbeat. I'm a mediocre to bad artist & not the best dev, but everything I want all at once works the most conveniently on OSX. WINE does help many people but for my 3/🧵

daily needs, I agree. Pushing the ability to get Windows apps working on Linux does often come with the caveat of debugging, solving crashes, & anxiously expecting a patch of some sorts to break daily flow. I'm actually getting good use out of it for the first time, in the form of bringing over a ton of windows vst plugins for music work. It's a good use case for wine as these plugins are generally pretty small and constrained in various ways.
