I was just wondering the same. I went to my account, downloaded the friends data in JSON format and then checked. I got the date added in my following list and date added in my follower list, nothing more there. From there, I could browse through my activity data and find out what triggered it.
I tried to cross it with the other downloadable data and unless I liked or saved the video that triggered the follow, there is nothing to cross-reference it. 🤷♂️
