What used to be a 5 lb bag of sugar has been 4 lbs for a while now. Same price though. As a side note, I have stock in the company but it's not worth the paper it's printed on.
They make the size of the packaging smaller and still charge the same price as before. Gatorade was the first to do that. That's why the shelves were so empty for so long.
Indicative of the real welfare queens and terrorists you need to worry about, not someone from another country, they're right in your backyard, running multi-billion dollar corporations, and holding office.
Your oppression is their profession
As someone who worked in CPG , I can attest to Shrinkflation ( reduction of size at same price ) and Skimpflation ( replacing an ingredient with a lower quality one at same price ) as ways to Β΄hide β a price increase to the consumer
They're addicted to more profit each year, which will ultimately become unattainable. Let's get the popcorn out instead ( home made of course), and watch them implode.
Somewhat OT, but noticing smaller packaging our fam had a weekend discussion on how Double Stuf Oreos are now thinner like the original, and theyβve released Mega Stuf. So does that mean the original has even less filling than before? If so, Iβm in - but pls give me the same number of servings!
What candy bar companies did to reduce the size of chocolate bars is a national disgrace. I would use the term catastrophe but, you know, way too soon. Still. Chocolate!!!
Hefty has made their storage bags paper-thin now. With production runs in the millions they save money despite making record profits. Thatβs the Republicants mentality folks.
The Chinese mentality adopted by Republicans.
I bought a Little roll of Romex electrical wire from Walmart, made in China. I spliced it into an American-made Romex and immediately noticed the Chinese Romex was slightly smaller!
If they can save a penny on a million units that's $100,000 π²π‘
I was just taking to my son about how thin Zip log storage bags are. They are as thin as sandwich bags. Another example is Costcoβs cookies and muffins used to be huge, now they are average size.
These foods are ultra processed, highly addictive and inflammatory edible substances - THEY ARE NOT FOODS as a result the ONLY way to make MORE profit from you, is to reduce the contents, because you can only eat so much out of so many hrs in a day.
It wouldnβt surprise me if the rest of their profits are probably from their investment in Big Pharma that charge a fortune to treat NOT cure the diseases their EDIBLE SUBSTANCES cause!!!
It's not even increasing the price for the same amount of product. It is an increasing price for less and less product. Do they think we don't notice? I walk right past these outrageous increases. Keep your chips and soda.
There needs to be investigative journalistic pieces GALORE at a minimum! If not full on regulation to avoid gouging and opportunism. Short of journalists getting it together to stop writing click bait and get back to reporting the truth... we can stop buying the worst offenders.
Doritos supplied Russian troops with "essential foods" under sanctions.
Their profits went through the roof, un-aliving Ukrainians and supporting a war criminal
Doritos and ruffles used to be favorite snacks.
I know it's just 1 house, but if everyone joined, it'd make a statement
Grocery store employee hereπ. Keep an eye on the Tide, too. The jugs we got this week have fewer ounces in them. Another sneaky shrink-flation most people don't even notice is cereal.
When I went to the grocery store to get ingredients for Christmas cookies, I wondered how many shoppers realize that sugar used to come in 5 LB bags and now it's 4 LB.
It's called shrinkflation. A friend worked for Kimberley Clarke and at a sales meeting someone asked who will make the decision to remove the last 10 sheets off a roll of toilet paper
There are recipes online for a lot of snacks. Since they're calories you don't need without the nutrition you do need, making them from scratch should be a once-in-a-while thing. Plus you'll avoid chemicals including PFAS.
I had a package of a dozen jalapeΓ±o poppers not too long ago, and only half of them had cream cheese in them. I also found cat food in the bottom of a freshly opened box of Cheez-Its that I was eating. Wtf.
I am still waiting for my Credit Union to reduce the interest rate on my line of credit. Every time Jerome Powell raised the interest rates my credit union raised my rates and added the new amount to my balance. I Don't think shrinkflation will go down, and our rent (mortgage) will not go down. π‘
Some woman at Walmart was complaining about chips in the checkout aisle near me. I told her stop buying them. No one has reached that βnot worth itβ point yet and theyβll keep doing I until we stop buying it. It was like a light bulb lit up over her head, sheβd never considered it like that before.
Try being the person who has to check those complainers out every day.
I can't count the number of complaints I've gotten about the price of pop. Who in hell even needs pop?! I tell those customers to go home and research how much that particular company made in profits in the last year.
I think we all get pissed off at some point and itβs different for each person. I can say for myself that I have reached the not-worth-it point on a few products. Mostly junk food items, chips, low quality candy and chocolates. Iβll just pass and bake my own cookies. More expensive, better quality.
"I told her stop buying them ..."
whoa there now, let's not get crazy here. I mean gotta be real. Just put my home heating on a credit card as long as I still get my Nacho Gigante Xtra Caliente Butt Blast corn chips. Priorities
Knowing this, if you're Trump, you give corporations a tax break and supplement their needs. Because who doesn't feel bad for greedy, self indulging, ungrateful billionaires, right?
Hormel Black Label Bacon used to say about 15 pieces, now it says about 10 pieces, and the price never changed. This is more corporate greed. Check out https://executivepaywatch.org this will show what these Corporate CEO's make per year.
I know they will, be continuing to raise all their prices because of Trump and his associates. Theyβll take a cut off the top, cut off the middle and a cut off the bottom! Trump has got a crew of career criminals and grifters helping him rip off the American people!! and it wonβt stop with that!
If only this were a new thing. When was the last time you bought a pint, quart, or 16 oz. package of anything? Coffee - 12 oz., random jar of sauce 12.1 oz., can of Guinness 14.9 oz., jar of Orzo 14.5 oz, coconut oil 14 oz., mayonnaise 30 oz. And that's what fits here and is visible in my pantry rn.
@ Aldi yesterday I saw ground turkey which has been consistently selling for $6.99 for 2 pounds 4 ounces as long as I can remember, but price was β¬οΈ. I commented out-loud to myself & the guy stocking shelves said he thought the pkg weight was β¬οΈ too. Price per pound was exactly the same! Stunned!
I switched to cloth napkins, make my own βpaper towelsβ from flannel and cheese cloth. I have toilet paper (duh), and paper paper towels for my pets messes. We have chickens and garden. We share/swap w our family and friends. But I feel bad for those who canβt do this. And it will get worse.
The shrinkage is absolutely theft! Same price and apparently they think we don't notice. How is Trump going to affect that? He isn't! That's the answer.
My husband and I were discussing the size of ice cream containers. Since weβre both 66, we were alive when ice cream was sold only by the gallon and half gallon. Pretty soon all we will be able to buy is one pint.
I REMEMBER THOSE! Ice cream was sold in cardboard, no lids, just a flip top. Mom would pick one up and divide it into 5 portions and we'd all get ours, LOL. That's more than I think I could eat these days!
The game runs in plain sight and has, most likely, forever. Quantity shrinks by fractions of hushed smaller size or boldy announced loss of calories, fat, etc. Then, BOOM! NOW 20% MORE! SAME LOW PRICE! We humans LOVE IT!
We stop thinking. No? The SAME manipulative psychology just ELECTED A FELON!!
read this earlier today so that when i went to buy some peanut m&ms, i noticed the price had gone up another $3 and i wondered how many m&ms less there were in the bag ... then a young guy behind me had a bag of doritos and i almost said something about there being fewer chips but refrained ...
Interestingly, the only product mentioned that is seemingly useful, is the paper towels. And that is replaceable with fabric towels.
We give up our health and arguably our environment, for convenience. At at what cost?
Im in love with Skoy dishcloths (available on Amazon). They're Danish & made from recycled materials. I use them rather than paper towels. When they get dirty, throw them in the washer (or DW) & they're ready to go again!
Ice cream is now sold in 1-1/2 quart cartons, rather than the previous 1/2 gallon carton, so they shrunk it by 1/2 quart. And check out the WIDTH of toilet paper rolls these days. They are at least 1/2 inch shorter than they used to be. #SneakyShrinkflation
"Shrinkflation" - companies have been doing it for years.
That half-gallon of ice cream? Guess again! It's 1.5 quart now.
Toilet paper is the one that really gives me a laugh. As the roll sizes get smaller, at some point they'll sell you ONE square that's supposed to last like 12 rolls did...
My rural grocery store sometimes has the old and new (smaller) packages right next to each other on the shelf. At the SAME price!
I noticed ice cream this way several years ago. The half gallon had been 1.75qt, the new smaller 1.5qt containers were right next to the last of the old stock.
Rapacious corporatism. The core of final stage capitalism where it devours everything and destroys itself and society along with it. Tick, fucking tock β¦
Yep. About the only people who really see the shrink-flation with cereal are those of us working in grocery stores who put the new boxes on the shelf with old ones still in stock. There's maybe a half-inch difference between the box sizes. But they manage to cut 2 oz of cereal in the new ones.
FACT: After the global pandemic supply chain issues subsided, βweβre taking pricingβ is how corporations described their βprice gougingβ on earnings calls. Keyword: taking. Itβs pretty obvious they did this to hurt Biden/Harris, and help the Devil.
Go to the store and try to buy a pound of coffee.
You can't.
Years ago, they started putting coffee in 12 ounce bags, but of course displaying the price per pound to give the consumer the impression that they were still buying a pound for the price displayed.
Kraft mayo had a 16 oz jar. Perfect for making ranch dressing. Then all of a sudden my ranch dressing was not very thick. It was that Kraft 16 oz jar was now 15 oz. Same size same price. Pretty sure thereβs more we donβt realize
Letβs find a company that is not doing this. Iβm convinced that someone is still honest. Here in Italy weβre facing the same issue but some smaller companies are still resisting the urge to do so.
My friend made a recipe which requires a box of Ritz crackers. She's made it before with no problems. This time out the dish was a sloppy mess. Why? They are now putting less crackers in a box.
Shrinkflation has been around as a popular ripoff tactic for a couple of decades. But it's only in the past 5 years or so that it has become rampant. Economists are struggling on how to account for this in inflation calculations.
Five chips= ridiculous. Before Kroger's CEO confessed to Congress that he "took advantage of inflation," it was obvious they were price gouging. We need to stop giving them $$$. I've decided if a good isn't not at Trader Joes, Costco or local farmer's markets, I don't need it.
I stopped buying spaghetti sauce long ago when my husband needed to go low sodium. It's so easy to make your own. All you need is oil, garlic, canned crushed tomatoes, and tomato paste. The best part is you can season it however you want.
Yes!! I like to saute onions first, add some shredded carrots (hidden veg!!), and minced garlic. Then add in all that stuff you listed plus herbs. My husband says itβs better than the premade stuff and itβs cheaper.
I have to laugh at boxes of cereals. The boxes are huge. Open them up and there's hardly anything inside. Boxes may just have more nutritional value as well.
This one makes me livid. My mother, back in the 70s, bought one 4-pack of TP a week, for a family of nine and 7 of those nine were female. Now, I go through a 4-pack in about 4 days and I use as little as possible.
True & it's very hard to stop buying these things. Try as I might,
I often break my own promises of "walk the walk selftalk" in moments of weakness. My one recourse has always been to boycott the company, ya know, to withhold cash. I keep trying.βοΈ
They donβt want to pay taxes, the hire labor cheap. We keep on moving from place to place but they get tax breaks and donβt want to pay federal tax or state taxes. WOW!!

IT IS CORPORATE GREED
No more pounds, shillings and pence.
