The US imports far more from Canada and Mexico than what these respective countries do from the US. Tariffs on US goods coming here will hurt, but overall it won't hurt us as much as it hurts the US. Nobody needs pop tarts. Apparently everyone needs avocado toast.
You do realize that you’re making a case for why the USA should place tariffs on Mexican goods?
Mexico and Canada are supposed to be importing more goods from the USA.
That was part of NAFTA… or that’s what we were told.
You seem to be making the case that free trade works more for them than us
.. BUT.. “free” trade shouldn’t be conditional on a man-child’s whims or scape-goating of the opioid crisis that America single-handedly manufactured….
I’m responding to the post that says that the USA imported far more than our trade partners.
Maybe it’s time that the USA send someone into the negotiations with America’s best interests in mind and negotiate from there.
This tariff issue resulted in both Canada and Mexico agreeing to contribute
Canada imported $7,000 worth of US goods per Canadian resident in 2023. The US only imported $1,280 worth of goods from Canada, per resident of the US.
The way Canada is doing it is designed to inflict maximum pain on American industry. Rather than a blanket 25% e.g. they are doing it only on products from red states or only on American Whiskey or Florida orange juice. Products consumers can easily find other versions of.
