They did that because they were "new money" who wanted to be accepted by "old money" society. Now "new money" is more respected and so all they are left with to accrue respect within their peer group is to get more and more.
I don't. I regret them ever existing and taking those, what should be public funds, to use for their vanity projects. There is no legitimate billionaire and nothing they should do should be lauded.
True. The old robber barons were pretty dispicable, but at least they felt ashamed enough to give back. The nouveau riche just take. Also, the old money either had taste or were smart enough to know they didn't have taste and hired people who did. The noveau riche are embarrassingly crass.
It was usually their wives that did the "good works." They had to channel their probably superior intellect, leadership skills, and actual morals somehow since they had to stand behind or mor accurately under their husbands.
Change the tax laws to incentivize this again and it'll come back. The Rockefellers & Carnegies & whatnot who have their names on so many buildings weren't any less greedy than Musk and Bezos today, they were just given a choice to either use their wealth for the public good or to have it taxed away
I live in Bangor, Maine where Stephen King is. I have say, he and his wife are some of the most generous wealthy people. They built a modern, massive baseball field for the city and paid for repairs and a new addition to the library. Wonderful giving people and they don't like trump.:)
Yeah, and now they just spend it on big glamour crap, like huge boats, a plane, big houses, really some expensive clothes that are really not worth the money when you only wear it once. Oh, and vehicles don't get me started one everyday and two or three more they might ride twice!
So true. Though we must not forget that there are still wealthy people that are trying to do something useful for humanity. But instead of praise they seem to provoke hate lately.

I would like the homeless housed in nice communities with health and food services.
Sorry about the confusion comrade
Maybe not the ideal but humans need to get established in space and governments ain't cutting it. I don't like it but it's the truth.
