Best way to make new friends, learn from others’ experiences, and find joy and peace through escapism. Couldn’t recommend getting a library card more than days like these.
I saved this… If civil war breaks out, meet me at the library.
They don't know where it is. (If you know me you know I like to use visual aids and it’s not permitting me to.)
I’d like to give a shout out to our library here in Georgetown Ky. A relatively small community of around 30K our local government has seen fit to invest and expand the library I so cherish. I wish I had pictures to share the story time and children’s center. I can’t say enough about it’s value.
I encourage everyone who can to skip the inauguration and go to your library on Monday… If they’re open, I know it’s Martin Luther King Day. But wouldn’t that be a good sit in!?
Just renewed an audiobook I was only half way thru. Great source for bookclub books without having to buy a book you might not want to add to your personal library. Ours does all kind of fun activities for all age groups.
Libraries are just about books. They are warm areas for people to meet. They are places were people can share their same interests. They are IT centres were those who need to can get online to pay bills and communicate with govt departments.
The mindset of some is that if they don't use the library then other people don't.
They could not be more wrong.
Our village is expanding the library with a view to moving into a larger building. The library manager has outgrown the current site due to her successful innovative ideas.
our library system has 16 branches.
one more is opening in April.
2 more are planned within next 1.5 years.
I has a jerk come in to tell us we were dying... 'couse we are. that's why we open all those branches...
Here in Overland Park, we have a resource library that once used to be a place like Best Buy until it went out of business. It was turned into the library it has remained to be, and this was about 25 years ago.
I see so much DEFENCE of libraries, that there must be an enormous ATTACK on them! I want you to know I've not seen that anywhere except the US, so keep in mind that attack isn't normal in any way. It is a perversion.
Have been my go to since childhood. I’ve lived in other parts of the world and my usual first stops are the local library. Librarians have a special place in my heart.
Thank you for being there for me and countless others in the community.
Libraries are essential resources in the small towns of Iowa, where they serve as the hangout after school, the place for book club and story time. For many years, some of my community college students didn't have fast internet at home so they went to their local libraries.
Also look into the system that your library is a part of. When I was working in Pittsburgh, there was a library branch within a 10 minute walk of the office. The branch was connected to every library in the county, so I could request just about any book or movie you can think of to my local branch.
Weekly. We love the library. It's not just for books. They have programs, classes, music programs, enrichment toys to check out, etc. If you don't use your library, you should.
it's funny but whenever I bring up the fact that internet is a need in this day and age the proponents of that say that "libraries still exist and you can go there for your internet needs.
My wife is a librarian and I'm constantly amazed at the sheer volume and diversity of programs she organizes. From free supplies for teachers, to dance classes, and from animal sanctuary demonstrations to a god damned Baby Rave, they do so much for the community and it's all 100% *free*
Urge people to pick up a couple of those low priced leftover physician’s desk references! It shows that we had 2417 pages filled with thoroughly tested medications with decades of safe use. The truth is still the truth.
Libraries are more than mere repositories of books. They are nurturing spaces and encourage us to dream or to abet creativity. As such, the quality of light in a library is so crucial as is the interior design.

The book to read is not the one which thinks for you, but the one which makes you think.

I do not know who the quoter is exactly but I think it may be James McCosh a Scottish philosopher
That is why I use public libraries
I stopped buying books about a year ago. Exclusively using ebook and audio book apps like Libby though my city and county library. I also take my four year old grandson to the library monthly. He checks out ten books at a time. I love taking him.
unfortunately the only library near me is severely underfunded and barely has any books, also due to the layout it's not even that enjoyable of a place to read, too loud and bright with no cover anywhere.
a sad thing :(
if u live in the US, my librarian said the budget is based on use. our local library has been pushing ppl to check out books so they can justify their budget (and our library is popular! ppl just read there instead of checking out!)
My daughter with a US studies honours degree wants a career in libraries. One of our few egalitarian gifts in a very divided and selfish society. New York library placement was a highlight, with wonderful documents available for her thesis. The right hates thinkers and readers. They hate knowledge.
I’m a fighter. I have Libby. Use it begrudgingly. I so enjoy hitting the library every week. Nothing replaces the tactile feeling of an actual page as it turns.
I rarely use my local library as my reading is mostly specialist academic. That said, I’ve just taken out my first fiction book in 16 years! My wife, however, is on first name terms with the ordering system. And the inter-library lending system makes the choice far wider than what is on the shelves.
Yup, I use my library all the time. I put holds on new releases, and if the book really knocks me out when I read the library copy, I purchase a copy of my own. I also borrow DVDs.
Libraries are so much more than just books. Want to 3D print? Laser etch glassware? Sew? Check your library. They might have a maker's space or loan out sewing machines. Many even let you check out a wifi hotspot if you don't have regular Internet. All free to the patron.
Some libraries have lots more than books. You can check out a computerized embroidery sewing machine or quilting machine. All kinds of crafting tools, toys, games, sports stuff....they do more than books.
My local library has so many community events. They have so many fun and free programs for adults and for kids. My daughter and granddaughter go pretty regularly
I love the Sacramento library. I rarely have to wait more than a couple weeks to get a new book via ebook. I am reading more now that i am semi retired and find it a great value!
Exactly. Who needs magazine subscriptions, i go to my library and read what I want from each one. Nice to just sit and read, people watch a little, enjoy the (mostly) quiet, think, enjoy.
Visit your local library, they're the place to be!
Nevada dumbasses just voted to eliminate funding our libraries..a bill that would NOT raise taxes and use funds already in place for the NEXT 30 YEARS !! now the money goes into the general fund to be pilfered by our maga state
Just finished setting up list of Velshi's banned books to access through my local library!! I often go there to work remotely 1 or 2 days a week & I love how it supports & attracts the community.
Currently I don't go to Libraries; but they were a blessing when I had been made homeless at the end of 2019. I was in a shelter, but they expected us to go out during the day; it was Winter time! I could also access PCs there, and stay in touch with people. I may become homeless again at some point
I'm literally at my library at least once a week. Yes, I use it mostly for DVD rentals, but I also check out the occasional graphic novel. My children check out more books than I can hope to read in a year. My 12 year old daughter is currently reading "War and Peace" - from the library!
And if you have a library card, you almost certainly have access to the 'Libby' app, which allows you to read all the books & audiobooks you want on your phone and/or computer, FOR FREE! I've been metaphorically burning up their shelves for a year or so. I wish I'd learned about it before I was 71!
I never returned a book as a kid can someone pls confirm if that is on my permanent library record or ??? Bc I want to go so bad but I can’t handle shame and will cry 😢 thx in advance 💕
They just voted to defund our libraries in my county. I'm so disappointed. I actually do use my library because I'm poor. Just another thing I won't have access to. I donate books and media to them when I can. People just don't value anything like this anymore. Our communities are eroding.
My #children and I take refuge at #SFPL main or nearest branch during the rain. It’s another play land for them. My oldest gets lost #L.MMontgomery #books, my youngest gets all the #Dogman he can eat with his mind & books on #trucks and #machines. ♥️ I sit down with #Hitchens or #Conrad
I understand this. But living in a very small town, our library has mostly children's or Christian books. Great for those folks. And I can't get a card to one in a larger town because I'm not in their county.
I'm happy for the kids and Christians just a little bummed for me.
Spent many happy hours in childhood at a public library waiting for my mom to finish work. These days, I often have many books checked out...hard copy, ebooks, audiobooks. I love Multnomah County Library's Lucky Day program. 💜 I often take a walk to my local library on weekends to browse and read.
Libraries, probably more than any other single part of our communities, have been at the forefront of recognizing our changing needs and have responded quickly to them
I honestly have never met someone who thinks Libraries are not relevant who wasn't also a weird libertarian with fantasies of privatizing the entire government.
To follow up on this, we're still actively meeting monthly. Anybody that needs help with their writing is welcome. It's just not for authors. Everyone is a writer.
Quintaria was kicked offline was a book 20 years had a book under purity publicans I saved it all 3 months before illuminati orginization???? or somebody from the oasis took it offline, it's on my blogger I have a link but someone posted it on the other blue sky.
Take my grandkids there to read often, and download my books from Libby or Hoopla since I read ebooks now. Vote there, attend seminars there, and borrow movies and puzzles. I love my local library!
No cookbooks or books on car repair, any kind of diy, sports, What to Expect When You're Expecting, local area maps, knitting, autobiographies, how to grow 🌽, travel, learning a foreign language or trying to understand a recent diagnosis?!
Why on earth were those removed? Seriously, why? 😳
So relevant! Libraries build communities. Even more prevalent now and needed given how digital the world is. My teenage daughters are there all the time!

They’re a place for focus and creativity, information, community and an integral part to a society that values development.
Students excluded from school can sit in there and access knowledge for life.

That is a well funded library
it's a sad reality, but it is reality.
I thought I'd let people work it out for themselves.
A little test...
I agree with you completely; libraries are an invaluable community resource - they're a virtual world of imagination and information - all for free.
It's important to remind our communities that if we don't use it, we'll lose it!
They could not be more wrong.

Physical libraries hold documents unaltered for decades or centuries.
Physical libraries are also becoming the place were content from obsolete media, like floppy disks and VHS, can be accessed and salvaged.
Thank you for being there for me and countless others in the community.
MAGA hates books.
The Fanta Menace hates books.
ALL authoritarians hate books.
Why?
All for the same reason;
Independent critical thought is a THREAT to their hold on power!
have evolved and kept up with the times
so they are very reverent to the community
and very much needed
The book to read is not the one which thinks for you, but the one which makes you think.

In the olden days, we called it the Libes.
Visit your local library, they're the place to be!
My mother checks out books from the local library weekly.
Our library are still important!
unless there’s something going on, so you gotta check the calendar 💡
… art, displays, kiosks, remembrances, readings, concerts, my friends model architectural masterpieces 🤷🏼♂️
I'm happy for the kids and Christians just a little bummed for me.
3d printers to use
Other craft/creative stuff
Musical instruments to borrow (violins!)
Recording studio space
Ice skates to borrow!
Other sports gear
I take the grandkids, they love it
