At some level we've always been like this. The people that are surprised that Rage Against the Machine songs are political. The unwillingness to engage beyond first level obvious. It's just that wrestling never had its academic moment & fandom/industry fights it. Wrestling is weird art but it is art

The artfulness seems to keep winning in the end but it's still painful how many weird old people hang on

I've always wanted to take a zero context hardcore film studies professor and lock them in a room with nothing but a decade of "choose your favorite company" tapes & see what they get out of it. That level of character narrative is there but fandom finds it decades later telling stories of legends.

Two matches that come to mind. Chris Brookes vs Despy & Mizuki vs Yuka Sakazaki. I can talk wrestling all day but those two matches are two messy romance novels. Brookes vs Despy comes with a "tasteful" reversible cover.

I haven't seen Brookes/Despy, but Yuka's MISERY during that match was incredible. The cruelest match you could make a wifeguy have, all while Mizuki, if I remember, manages to just get her way through without nearly as many hangups. Which makes sense!!

Oh god, this reminds me of when I went googling those Awesome vs Tanaka matches after briefly mentioning them a few weeks ago, and was horrified to see people complaining that there was "no psychology", with one guy even downgrading them because there was no Brett Hart-style limb work

Also "his matches would be better with better psychology" applies to almost everyone. Always room to be better.

But also a lot of matches would be better with more PHYSICALITY too and Mike that stat almost maxed out, and somehow Tanaka was built to take it. They fit together perfectly!
